How many Brazil nuts is too many? The selenium limit most people don’t know

The tolerable upper intake level for selenium in adults is 400 micrograms per day, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. A single Brazil nut delivers 68 to 91 micrograms, which means five large nuts can push a healthy adult past that ceiling in one sitting.

The gap between "enough" and "too much" is smaller than most people realize. The Recommended Dietary Allowance for adults is only 55 micrograms per day, so a single Brazil nut typically covers the entire daily requirement on its own. Regular seafood, meat and egg eaters may already be near the RDA before they open the bag.

The symptoms selenium overdose leaves behind

Chronic overexposure causes selenosis. NIH clinical guidance lists the most common warning signs as hair loss and nail brittleness or loss, along with a garlic odor on the breath, a metallic taste in the mouth, skin rash, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, irritability and nervous system abnormalities.

Selenium sits in what the NCBI Bookshelf StatPearls entry calls a narrow therapeutic window, where the beneficial dose and the toxic dose are close together. The World Health Organization threshold cited in the same reference is 400 micrograms per day for adults aged 19 and older.

The real-world consequences are documented. In 2008, the FDA recalled two liquid supplements marketed as Total Body Formula and Total Body Mega Formula after they were mismanufactured to contain up to 200 times the labeled dose of selenium. A total of 201 confirmed cases of selenosis were reported across multiple states, with hair loss, nail damage, muscle and joint pain, fatigue and neurological symptoms that in many people persisted years later.

How to enjoy Brazil nuts without overdoing it

For selenium sufficiency, one to two Brazil nuts a day is plenty. Anyone already taking a multivitamin or selenium supplement should factor that in, because the label dose stacks on top of what the nut delivers.

Selenium also shows up in other everyday foods. NIH data lists tuna, halibut, sardines, ham, shrimp, beef, turkey, chicken, cottage cheese and eggs among the meaningful sources, which means a mixed diet reaches the RDA without any Brazil nut habit at all.

Persistent hair thinning, brittle or discolored nails or an unexplained garlic odor on the breath are reasons to see a doctor and mention any high-selenium foods or supplements in the routine. Selenosis is treatable, but the fix starts with cutting the source.
