The 10,000-step target most people chase came from a 1965 Japanese pedometer campaign, not from a clinical trial. Research published since in The Lancet Public Health, JAMA Network Open and JAMA Internal Medicine shows the step count linked to the longest life shifts with age, and for many adults it sits well below 10,000.
A 2022 meta-analysis of 15 international cohorts, led by University of Massachusetts Amherst epidemiologist Amanda Paluch, pooled data on nearly 50,000 adults from four continents to map the dose. It found that the mortality benefit from walking levels off at roughly 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults 60 and older, and 8,000 to 10,000 steps for adults under 60.
Where the 10,000 rule actually came from
In 1965 the Japanese company Yamasa Tokei Keiki launched a pedometer called Manpo-kei, which translates literally as "10,000-step meter." The number was chosen partly because the Chinese character for 10,000 resembles a walking person, and partly because round figures sell products. No clinical study underpinned it at the time.

Above each range, additional steps did not add measurable protection against premature death in the pooled data.
What the middle-aged data show
A JAMA Network Open study of 2,110 adults with a mean age of 45 tracked accelerometer readings from 2005 to 2006 and mortality out to 2018. Compared with those taking fewer than 7,000 daily steps, participants averaging 7,000 or more had a substantially lower risk of dying during the roughly 11-year follow-up. Faster walking pace did not add benefit once total step volume was accounted for.
That echoes a broader pattern across the studies. What seems to matter is how much you move over the day, not how quickly.

For adults over 60, the bar is lower
A 2019 NIH-supported study followed 16,741 women with an average age of 72 for more than four years. Women averaging about 4,400 steps a day had a 41 percent lower risk of dying during the study than women averaging 2,700 steps. The benefit kept climbing as step counts rose but flattened at roughly 7,500 steps, with no clear added protection beyond that point.
"Taking 10,000 steps a day can sound daunting. But we find that even a modest increase in steps taken is tied to significantly lower mortality in older women," said I-Min Lee of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, who led the work.
What it means in practice
For most adults, the useful message is that steps count long before the 10,000 mark. Going from very little activity to a moderate amount delivers the biggest gain in the studies, and the curve then flattens at an age-dependent ceiling. Anyone with heart, joint or balance concerns should talk to a doctor before ramping up activity.
The Paluch team put it plainly. More steps are better for health, but the mortality benefit levels off around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for older adults, and higher up the range for younger adults.
