Many people often discuss what the difference between clementines and mandarins is. We have the answer for you.

Mandarins and clementines are often referred to as the same fruit, but according to Coop, they are in fact two different citrus fruits.

The confusion arises because they look very similar and are most often sold side by side.

What sets them apart

The most noticeable difference is experienced when the fruit is eaten.

Clementines are generally sweeter and, according to Raavareguiden, contain fewer seeds than mandarins.

Mandarins more often have several seeds and a slightly more pronounced tartness.

Appearance can also provide a clue. Mandarins are typically a darker orange, while clementines are lighter in color.

At the same time, clementines often have a thinner peel that sits closer to the flesh, which can make them harder to peel.

What they have in common

Despite the differences, there are many similarities.

The shape is almost the same, and the size varies so much from variety to variety that it cannot be used as a distinguishing feature.

Both fruits have a slightly dimpled peel with small oil sacs that release a citrus scent when peeled.

The contents are also very similar. Politiken notes that both mandarins and clementines contain high levels of vitamins A and C.

The white layer between the peel and the flesh, known as the albedo, is found in both fruits.

The history

The mandarin originally comes from China and, according to Politiken, gets its name from the orange robes worn by officials at the imperial courts. The fruit was brought to Europe in the 19th century.

The clementine, however, is not an independent fruit but a variety of mandarin, while the mandarin is the original species.
