Research suggests that daily AI use may affect your memory, brain activity, and emotional well-being. AI can be an effective everyday tool, but how you use the technology appears to matter. How you use AI may be what matters most

The amount of time you spend using AI does not appear to tell the whole story. According to the article, the role you give the technology may be particularly important. Using AI to support your own work is different from allowing it to replace your thinking or interactions with other people.
Using your own brain first could make a difference

Results from an MIT study suggest there may be benefits to working on a task yourself before turning to AI. Participants who started by thinking independently and only used AI afterward showed better memory recall and stronger brain activation.
Researchers monitored the brain during writing tasks

MIT Media Lab researchers studied 54 students between the ages of 18 and 39 from five universities in the Boston area. Over four months, participants completed 20-minute essay-writing tasks while researchers monitored their brain activity using 32-electrode EEG headsets.

The brain responded differently depending on the tool

Participants completed the writing tasks in three different ways. One group was allowed to use ChatGPT, another could use a search engine, while the third had to rely entirely on their own thinking. The brain measurements revealed differences between the groups.
Brain connectivity was strongest without digital assistance

The participants who wrote without external assistance showed the strongest and most widespread brain connectivity. Those who used a search engine fell between the two other groups, while the ChatGPT users showed the weakest connectivity.
Memory problems stood out among AI users

After the first writing session, 83 percent of participants using AI were unable to provide a quote from the essay they had just written. None produced an accurate quote. By the third session, one-third of the group still could not accurately quote their own work.
Offloading mental work may have consequences

The researchers used the term cognitive debt to describe the accumulating effect they observed. Their findings raise questions about what may happen when people repeatedly hand over a substantial part of their mental workload to AI.

The study has important limitations

The MIT findings should not be considered definitive. The research was published as a preprint and had not completed peer review. In addition, only 18 of the original 54 participants completed the crossover session that produced one of the study's most widely discussed findings.
The findings do not mean AI makes you less intelligent

The research points to something more specific than a general decline in intelligence. Lower mental engagement was associated with situations in which participants handed the entire task over to AI. When previous AI users were later asked to write without assistance, their engagement remained low.
Chatbots may also have emotional benefits

Researchers have also examined how chatbots can affect emotional well-being. Studies have found that chatbot use can reduce anxiety and loneliness while increasing feelings of social support. One reason may be that AI is readily available and can provide interaction without appearing judgmental.
Heavy reliance on AI may reverse those benefits

The picture changes when AI use becomes extensive and emotionally dependent. A randomized trial conducted by MIT and OpenAI researchers found that heavy daily use correlated with greater loneliness, increased emotional dependence, and less real-world socializing. People with fewer human relationships, greater social anxiety, or stronger attachment tendencies may be particularly vulnerable.

AI may be most useful when it remains a tool

Across the research, a common pattern emerges. Active use, where you continue thinking for yourself and verify AI-generated information, appears more beneficial than passive dependence. Human relationships should also remain a priority, and anyone struggling emotionally should not treat a chatbot as a replacement for a qualified professional or a trusted person.
