In a video on TikTok, gastroenterologist Wendi LeBrett warned that chronic reflux may be a significant cause of esophageal cancer, according to LADbible.
She explained that many people view acid reflux as a minor issue and often treat it with acid-suppressing medication.
However, if the symptoms persist for a long time, there may be consequences.
According to the information she shared, most people experience heartburn.

However, a larger group has no clear symptoms and therefore does not know they have reflux.
Many are affected each year
Cancer develops when cells in the esophagus begin to grow uncontrollably. Smoking, alcohol consumption, and being overweight increase the risk.
Cancer Research UK states that the risk increases if a person frequently experiences reflux symptoms or experiences them over a prolonged period.
The NHS explains that reflux can cause a sour taste in the mouth, coughing, hoarseness, bloating, and nausea. Symptoms often worsen after meals or when lying down.

Cancer
Long-term reflux can lead to Barrett’s esophagus. This is a condition in which the cells in the esophagus change, which can lead to cancer.
The disease is often detected late because the initial signs can resemble ordinary acid reflux.
Therefore, it may be important to speak with a doctor if symptoms persist over a long period of time.
