The idea that morning workouts are simply better has taken another hit. In a 12-week randomized trial published in Scientific Reports, sedentary men who trained between 6 and 8 a.m. and men who trained between 6 and 8 p.m. both improved their health, but the wins landed on different measures.
Morning training pushed body fat down faster and shifted the sleep-wake cycle earlier. Evening training did more for the blood vessels, including a bigger drop in systolic blood pressure. Neither group had a monopoly on the benefits.
The trial, run by a team spanning Dalian University of Technology, Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences and East China Normal University, divided 58 sedentary men into a morning exercise group, an evening exercise group and a non-exercising control. Both training groups logged at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic work per week for 12 weeks, matching the weekly minimum most public health agencies recommend.

Body fat dropped in both training groups, but the morning exercisers showed a measurable reduction as early as week 4. Their total cholesterol and triglycerides also fell over the 12 weeks.

Sleep quality improved in both groups, yet only the morning trainees advanced their internal clock. The researchers tracked melatonin onset in the evening and found that morning exercise pulled the timing earlier, aligning bedtime and wake time with the natural light cycle. That circadian shift, the authors argue, is part of why the morning group slept better.
A separate strand of evidence supports the pre-breakfast angle. In a small metabolic-chamber study published in EBioMedicine, 10 young men burned significantly more fat over 24 hours when they exercised before breakfast (717 kcal per day) than when they did the same workout after breakfast, after lunch or after dinner. The trial was tiny, and the effect has not been reproduced in larger populations, but it points to a plausible mechanism for early-morning fat metabolism.
Where evening exercise pulled ahead
The evening group in the Scientific Reports trial had the edge on vascular measures. Ultrasound of the carotid artery showed greater increases in blood flow rate and vessel dilation, and systolic blood pressure fell more than in the morning group. That fits with the idea that body temperature, muscle function and cardiovascular responsiveness all tend to peak later in the day.
Larger observational data hint that evening timing may also matter for long-term survival. In a 2024 study in Diabetes Care of 29,836 adults with obesity followed for a mean of 7.9 years, evening moderate-to-vigorous activity was associated with the lowest all-cause mortality risk (hazard ratio 0.39, 95% CI 0.27 to 0.55), lower than morning (HR 0.67) or afternoon (HR 0.60) activity. The design is observational, so it cannot prove that shifting your workout to the evening would extend your life. It does suggest that evening exercisers, as a group, do at least as well as morning exercisers on hard endpoints.

What this means in practice
The 58-person Chinese trial is small and studied only men, so the exact size of each benefit should be read with caution. The direction of the findings, however, lines up with a growing body of chronobiology research. Morning aerobic work seems to reset the body clock and mobilize fat; evening work seems to relax arteries and lower resting blood pressure.
If your primary goal is better sleep, weight loss or a shift toward a morning schedule, the current evidence tilts toward exercising early. If it is blood pressure or vascular health, an evening session may deliver more. For people managing a diagnosed condition such as hypertension or diabetes, the timing question is worth raising with a doctor rather than settled by a headline.
One point both the trial authors and outside cardiologists tend to stress: the largest gains still come from exercising consistently at any time, compared with not exercising at all. A workout you actually do beats a theoretically optimal workout you skip.
