Coffee and cola might sound like a strange combo, but food writer Taryn Pire swears it’s a match made in caffeine heaven.

Introduced to the fizzy, flavorful drink by her soda-loving boyfriend, she was skeptical at first – but quickly became a convert.

It’s not just a TikTok trend

Despite sounding like a Gen Z experiment, coffee cola is far from new.

Coca-Cola launched a coffee-infused soda called Coca-Cola Blāk back in 2006. They later introduced Coca-Cola Coffee Plus and Coca-Cola with Coffee in various countries, though it never quite took off.

The flavor balance is shockingly good

Coffee’s bitterness and acidity blend surprisingly well with cola’s sweet, caramel, and citrusy notes.

The result is a smooth, flavorful drink that’s easier to enjoy than plain black coffee.

No extra sugar needed

Since cola already brings its own sweetness, you can skip the sugar or syrup. That makes it a potentially lighter option than a sugar-laden Frappuccino or flavored latte.

A gentler caffeine boost

Espresso shots can sometimes hit like a freight train. Coffee cola offers a more moderate caffeine lift, thanks to the combination of soda and coffee – perfect if you’re looking to avoid post-latte jitters.

It smells as good as it tastes

Add a splash of almond or oat milk, and the drink smells like a chocolatey egg cream or creamy Coke float.

It’s rich but not overwhelming – an aromatic treat from the first whiff.

You can experiment with flavors

The possibilities are endless: vanilla, cherry, caramel, mocha – even fruit purées.

These flavors complement cola’s existing profile and can take the drink in new, delicious directions.

It’s easy to make at home

All you need is coffee (instant, brewed, or espresso), cola, and optionally, some non-dairy milk.

The writer’s boyfriend swears by a simple mix of almond milk, instant coffee, and diet cola. No barista skills required.

No ice? No problem

By starting with cold ingredients, you don’t need to water down your drink with ice. That means your coffee cola stays flavorful and refreshing, even as it sits.

It’s cheaper than your usual coffee run

A homemade coffee cola costs a fraction of what you’d pay at Starbucks or your local café. Plus, you’re in full control of taste, strength, and sweetness.

A smarter soda alternative

If you already start your day with a can of soda, coffee cola is an easy upgrade.

It’s more dynamic in flavor and can be adjusted to give you just the kick you need – without reaching for an energy drink.
