Sleep is essential for both body and mind, but the time we go to bed can reveal more about our lifestyle than we might think.

A new survey and several international studies have shed light on when it might actually be best to close our eyes.

The average bedtime is 11:18 PM

A survey of 2,000 Americans shows that people, on average, fall asleep at 11:18 PM after starting their bedtime routine at 10:15 PM.

The bedtime routine takes 21 minutes

Participants reported spending an average of 21 minutes getting ready for bed.

In bed by 10:36 PM, but sleep comes later

Although most are in bed around 10:36 PM, it takes an average of another 42 minutes before they fall asleep.

29 % are delayed by household chores

Nearly a third of those who went to bed later than planned were kept up by household tasks.

21 % stay up because they love the evening

For some, the evening is the highlight of the day, and they consciously choose to stay awake longer.

Research published in the European Heart Journal found that the time between 10:00 and 11:00 PM is associated with a lower risk of heart disease.
