Several common beverages can affect the effectiveness of blood pressure medication.

According to the Express, health experts warn that certain drinks may alter how blood pressure medication works in the body.

Some beverages can weaken its effect, while others may amplify it excessively.

Grapefruit juice, for example, can block an enzyme in the body that normally breaks down several types of blood pressure medication. This can result in too much of the medication entering the bloodstream.

Apple and orange juice may also affect the absorption of certain medications.

Alcohol and coffee

Alcohol is highlighted as a particular risk factor. It can both raise and lower blood pressure while also influencing how the medication works.

According to the Express, this may lead to dizziness, fainting, and an increased risk of falls.

Coffee and energy drinks contain caffeine, which can temporarily cause blood pressure to rise.

This may make it harder for the medication to work as intended. Moderate consumption is therefore recommended.

Tea and supplements

Licorice tea can cause blood pressure to increase, potentially counteracting treatment.

The same applies to certain herbal remedies and dietary supplements such as St. John’s wort, ginseng, and high doses of green tea extract.

Even vegetable juice can be problematic if it contains high levels of salt.

A high salt content can raise blood pressure and reduce the effectiveness of medications, including diuretics.

Experts therefore recommend that patients speak with their doctor or pharmacist if they are unsure about what they can drink while taking their medication.
