Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancer types, and the symptoms often creep in unnoticed. But the earlier you act, the better your chances. These are the warning signs you must be aware of.

Abdominal or back pain

Sharp or dull pain in the upper abdomen that radiates to the back can be one of the earliest signs. It often occurs when the tumor presses against nerves or nearby organs and may feel relieved when leaning forward. Many mistake it for muscle strain or back problems.

Jaundice

Yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes is a classic symptom that should not be ignored. Jaundice occurs when the tumor blocks the bile duct and can also cause itching, dark urine, and pale stools. In people with darker skin, it may be harder to spot – so look closely at the eyes.

Sudden weight loss

Unexplained weight loss – without changes in diet or exercise – can be a serious warning sign. The body often burns more calories in an attempt to fight the disease, and digestion may be impaired. A rapid drop in weight should always be investigated.

Changes in stool or urine

Greasy, pale, foul-smelling stools that are hard to flush or very dark urine can indicate that the pancreas isn’t functioning properly. This is often due to a reduced production of digestive enzymes, which are essential for breaking down food and fats.

Newly developed diabetes

If you suddenly develop type 2 diabetes without traditional risk factors like obesity or family history, it could be a red flag. The pancreas plays a central role in insulin production, and a tumor may interfere with this process.

Persistent fatigue

Unexplained exhaustion that doesn't improve with sleep or rest may be a warning sign. The body uses a lot of energy trying to fight off the illness, and energy levels can drop significantly, even during low activity.

Digestive issues and bloating

Recurring indigestion, bloating, and discomfort that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter medication can be signs of pancreatic cancer. The tumor may obstruct normal digestion and create disturbances in the gastrointestinal system.

If you suddenly lose interest in food – especially if this is unusual for you – it could be an early sign. This is often accompanied by feeling full very quickly or nausea after small meals. It's the body’s reaction to pancreatic disruption.

Nausea and vomiting

When a tumor presses on the digestive tract, it can lead to nausea or even vomiting. Many experience this especially after meals when digestion is active. These symptoms can come and go, but they should always be taken seriously.

Changed taste or smell

An often-overlooked symptom is a sudden aversion to specific foods – especially coffee, alcohol, or fatty dishes. This may be due to changes in enzyme activity and how the body processes certain foods, which is often affected by pancreatic disease.
