According to medical experts, this habit could be doing more harm than good.

You’ve just finished your workout. You're sweaty, tired and craving that refreshing shower. It's the ultimate reward, right? Not so fast.

Whether you’ve been lifting weights, cycling, playing tennis or just jogging through the park, chances are you head straight for the bathroom the moment you're done.

But that instant relief might be costing your body something important.

So what exactly is the issue with showering immediately after a workout?

Your body isn't ready

José Manuel Felices, a radiologist and university professor from Spain, explains that your body enters a complex recovery process the moment you stop exercising.

When your muscles work, they generate heat. To deal with it, your blood vessels expand and your body produces sweat to cool down.

If you jump into a cold or even lukewarm shower too soon, you're interrupting that delicate internal process.

According to José Manuel Felices, this can lead to dizziness, light-headedness, or even fainting in some cases.

Your body is still working to return to its normal state. And forcing it to cool down too quickly can throw off that balance.

It’s not just about temperature

Sweating doesn’t just regulate body heat. It also helps flush out toxins through your skin.

But if you scrub yourself down too soon, you may prevent your body from fully finishing that detox process.

That might be why some people feel like they’re still sweating after a shower.

On top of that, sweat has a slightly acidic pH that protects your skin from harmful bacteria.

If you rush into the shower and use strong or alkaline soaps, you strip away this natural barrier.

The result is dryness, irritation, and a weakened skin defense system.

So what should you do instead?

Experts recommend waiting at least 15 minutes before showering. Use that time to hydrate, stretch or simply relax.

Let your body cool down naturally before you clean it up.
