TikTok turned cottage cheese into a protein hero: What a daily bowl may do for you

Cottage cheese has become one of the loudest food trends on TikTok, showing up in ice cream, flatbreads, pancake batter and bedtime bowls.

The obsession is showing up on receipts too. US cottage cheese sales jumped 20% in retail in the 52 weeks through mid-June 2025, according to market research firm Circana, following roughly 17% annual gains in both 2023 and 2024 and an 11% rise in 2022.

Behind the trend sits a genuinely useful nutrition profile. One cup of low-fat cottage cheese carries about 23.5 grams of complete protein for around 183 calories, Yahoo Health reports, drawing on registered dietitian Amy Brownstein.

Dietitians at Cleveland Clinic and UCLA Health point to the same slow-release protein, calcium and probiotics as the reasons a daily bowl may support muscle, bone and gut health.

Why the protein is different

Most of the protein in cottage cheese is casein, a form that curdles in the stomach and digests slowly. That trickle-feed of amino acids is a big part of why lifters keep a tub in the fridge.

Cleveland Clinic dietitian Julia Zumpano, RD, LD, says casein "provides your cells with amino acids consistently," which is why it works well before sleep or after workouts.

A small trial has already suggested that a bowl of cottage cheese before bed can replace a casein shake for overnight recovery.

Slow protein also blunts appetite. According to Cleveland Clinic, "eating a high-protein diet can help you feel full and satisfied for longer," which can quietly cut back on between-meal snacking.

Plain cottage cheese also contains only about 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving with no added sugar, which is why UCLA Health lists blood sugar control among its everyday benefits.

Bone and gut effects

A cup of low-fat cottage cheese delivers roughly 251 mg of calcium, along with meaningful phosphorus and selenium.

Cleveland Clinic notes that dairy and protein are linked to a lower risk of fractures with age. That matters especially for anyone in a weight-loss phase, since dropping pounds can also chip away at bone density, Brownstein cautioned in Yahoo Health.

Cultured varieties add a gut angle. Cottage cheese made with live and active cultures contains probiotics that, according to Cleveland Clinic, "can help balance your gut microbiome and protect it from harmful bacteria."

Not every tub qualifies, so the label matters if that is the reason you are buying it.

The sodium and fat catch

Here is the honest caveat. A single cup of cottage cheese can carry close to 700 mg of sodium, Yahoo Health cites 696 mg, roughly 30% of the daily limit in US guidelines.

Full-fat versions also carry more saturated fat than low-fat ones.

For people watching blood pressure or cholesterol, that means checking labels and reaching for low-sodium or 2% versions rather than treating every carton as identical.

What a daily bowl may add up to

Eaten most days, cottage cheese offers a low-calorie, high-protein anchor that may help protect muscle, blunt appetite and support bone and gut health, particularly for older adults, active people and anyone trying to lose weight without losing muscle.

It is not a miracle food, and it is not right for every diet. But as viral trends go, this one lines up unusually well with what dietitians were already recommending.
