Caffeine withdrawal is a recognized clinical syndrome. Millions of daily coffee drinkers feel it within a day of their last cup, with the roughest stretch typically arriving on day two and full recovery within about a week.

A peer-reviewed review by Laura Juliano at American University and Roland Griffiths at Johns Hopkins identified five core withdrawal symptoms after pooling dozens of studies. How the timeline actually plays out

That means the roughest stretch usually lands on the second day rather than the first. Severity scales with habitual intake, so someone drinking four cups a day tends to crash harder than an occasional user.

Where the 400 milligram threshold sits

The FDA has cited 400 milligrams a day as an amount not generally associated with dangerous effects in healthy adults. That works out to roughly four or five cups of coffee, though individual sensitivity varies with body weight, medications, and existing conditions.

Caffeine also lingers. About half of a dose is still in the body four to six hours later, which is why an afternoon cup can delay sleep onset even when the drinker feels alert at bedtime.

Why quitting cold turkey backfires

Clinicians consistently recommend a gradual taper rather than stopping abruptly. Slowing the reduction over days or weeks gives adenosine receptors, which caffeine blocks, time to return toward baseline without a jarring rebound.

Beth Czerwony, a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic, described the process plainly. Withdrawal, she said, mirrors coming off any other substance. "Because it affects the central nervous system, you're going to get shaky, irritable and headachey," she noted.

What improves after the first week

Once withdrawal fades, many habitual drinkers report steadier daytime energy and less baseline anxiety. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine, the brain chemical that gradually builds sleep pressure during waking hours, and lower intake lets that signalling drift back toward normal.

Sleep is the clearest example. Deeper, more consolidated rest tends to return within a week or two of cutting back, particularly for people who were drinking coffee into the afternoon or evening.
