Ibuprofen is a common pain reliever, but how you take the medication matters.

Ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines known as NSAIDs. The medication reduces pain and inflammation, but it also affects some of the substances that help protect the stomach lining.

According to pharmacist Danielle Oncer, ibuprofen can reduce the body's production of substances that protect the stomach lining from stomach acid.

This can lead to stomach pain, heartburn, nausea and digestive problems, pharmacist Christine Cadiz told Parade.

The effect may be delayed

According to Oncer, ibuprofen may be absorbed more quickly when there is no food in the stomach. However, eating does not mean that the body absorbs less of the medication.

Instead, it may take around 30 to 60 minutes longer to feel the effects. A large or high-fat meal can delay absorption even further.

According to Oncer, people who use ibuprofen daily should speak with a healthcare professional. The same applies to people who take other medications.

What you should do

The pharmacists recommend avoiding taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach. According to Cadiz, however, there is no need to eat a full meal beforehand.

A small snack may be enough. She suggests options including toast, crackers, a banana, yogurt and cereal.

According to Parade, food may reduce the risk of stomach irritation. Alcohol should also be avoided, as the combination can increase the risk of irritation, bleeding and stomach ulcers.
