You might think you’re making a healthy choice – but it could actually be the opposite.

It fizzes on the tongue and feels light and fresh. Many choose it as a healthier alternative to soda. It contains no calories and seems harmless at first glance.

For many, it’s become a daily habit. Some drink it with lunch, others throughout the day instead of tap water.

But now, doctors warn that it may not be as innocent as it seems.

People with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or acid reflux may experience discomfort.

Sparkling water contains carbon dioxide, which creates gas in the stomach and can lead to bloating, acid reflux, and pain.

Several experts also point out that the acidity in sparkling water – even without sugar – can weaken tooth enamel over time.

This doesn’t necessarily make sparkling water bad, but it should be consumed with care and not used to replace still water completely.

Who should think twice before the next sip?

According to gastroenterologist Elena Ivanina, fizzy drinks like sparkling water can be problematic if you’re prone to bloating, gas, or diarrhea.

This isn’t necessarily caused by the sparkling water itself, but by the fact that you’re literally drinking gas bubbles.

Additionally, artificial sweeteners in some types of sparkling water can make the problem worse.

They can cause diarrhea and discomfort in people with sensitive stomachs.
