Eating one avocado a day for six months lowered the number of LDL particles circulating in the blood by an average of 49 nanomoles per liter, a change the researchers estimate corresponds to a 4 percent lower risk of heart disease.
The finding comes from an ancillary analysis of the Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial, published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology and led by nutrition scientists at Penn State.
The trial included 786 adults aged 25 and older with abdominal obesity, defined as a waist circumference greater than 40 inches for men and greater than 35 inches for women.
Half of the participants added one whole avocado to their usual diet each day. The other half continued eating as they normally would. After six months, weight and waist circumference in the two groups looked the same. What differed was the LDL particle count.

Why particle count, not just cholesterol
Standard cholesterol tests report how much cholesterol is packed inside LDL particles.
The particle count itself is a separate number, and one that some cardiologists consider a more accurate marker of cardiovascular risk than LDL cholesterol alone.
Two people can have identical LDL cholesterol values while carrying very different numbers of particles, and when the two measures disagree, the particle count tends to track more closely with actual heart events.
Small, dense LDL particles are of particular concern because they slip into artery walls more easily and feed the plaque buildup that narrows blood vessels over time.

Bringing the total number down is one way to lower that pressure on the arteries, independent of the cholesterol mass carried inside each particle.
What is in an avocado?
Avocados are unusual among fruits in that most of their calories come from fat, but almost all of it is monounsaturated, the same family of fats that gives olive oil its cardiovascular reputation.
They also supply soluble fiber and phytosterols, plant compounds that resemble cholesterol closely enough to block some of its absorption in the gut.
"Avocados contain several nutrients that have been linked to better heart and metabolic health, including monounsaturated fats, dietary fiber, and phytosterols," said Janhavi Damani, a postdoctoral scholar in the Penn State Department of Nutritional Sciences and first author on the paper.

Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian who was not involved in the trial, told Medical News Today that avocados are "rich in soluble fiber and naturally occurring phytosterols, which help reduce cholesterol absorption in the intestine, while their antioxidants, like vitamin E and polyphenols, may help protect LDL from oxidation."
A small change, not a miracle
The 4 percent risk estimate is modest, and the researchers say so plainly. "Four percent is a modest reduction compared with the 14% to 29% lower heart disease risk associated with improving the overall diet," Damani said in a Penn State announcement about the study. "However, it is a step in the right direction."
The benefit was consistent across sex, race, ethnicity, age, and body mass index in the trial. The trial was funded by the Avocado Nutrition Center, an industry-supported research group, a disclosure worth keeping in mind when weighing the size of the effect. It also did not measure heart attacks or strokes directly. The 4 percent figure is an estimate based on how LDL particle changes track with cardiovascular events in larger, longer studies.
People with high cholesterol or a family history of heart disease should still talk to their doctor about a full prevention plan rather than treating any single food as a fix.
