Adults aged 40 and older completed a section of an executive function test roughly 12% faster after one month of running a HEPA air purifier at home, according to a study published April 16, 2026 in Scientific Reports.
The finding comes from a randomized crossover trial of 119 residents of Somerville, Massachusetts, ages 30 to 74, who alternated between a working HEPA purifier and a sham unit that looked identical but did not filter the air.
About 42% of the participants were 40 or over, and the researchers focused their analysis on that group because cognitive decline linked to air pollution tends to accumulate with age. The task involved drawing lines between alternating numbers and letters, a standard measure of mental flexibility that also taps working memory and processing speed.
The improvement was small but statistically significant, and the researchers wrote that it lands in the same range as the cognitive gains people usually see from stepping up their daily exercise.

Why Somerville was the test bed

HEPA purifiers are designed to trap those particles, and the researchers wanted a real-world setting where cleaner indoor air could plausibly move the needle. What HEPA actually means

Matching the purifier to the room

The agency suggests multiplying the length and width of a room to find its area, then choosing a unit rated for at least that size, and sizing up when ceilings are higher than 8 feet. No portable air cleaner will strip out every pollutant, and the EPA does not endorse specific brands.
