Vanillin, the sweet flavor molecule used in a wide range of vape liquids, appears to interfere with the earliest stages of embryo development. In laboratory tests on human embryonic stem cells, even tiny amounts pushed the cells off their normal developmental path, and higher amounts killed them outright.
The work, published in Human Reproduction on August 12, 2026, was led by Prue Talbot, professor in the Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology department at the University of California, Riverside, and stem cell biologist Shabnam Etemadi. It adds a specific molecular mechanism to a growing list of concerns about vaping during pregnancy.
What the researchers actually did
Talbot and Etemadi exposed human embryonic stem cells to vanillin at two dose ranges: high (micromolar) and low (nanomolar). At the higher dose the cells died. At the lower dose, the level the researchers estimate could reach an embryo in a pregnant woman who vapes, the cells lost pluripotency, meaning they lost the ability to become any of the tissues a growing embryo needs.
"We found that micromolar concentrations tended to kill the cells. Nanomolar concentrations caused cells to lose pluripotency," Talbot said, according to News-Medical.

Instead of maturing into all three of the layers a healthy embryo needs, the exposed cells preferentially turned into endoderm, the tissue that later builds the lining of the gut and respiratory system. Ectoderm, which becomes the nervous system, and mesoderm, which becomes muscle and much of the body's connective tissue, were suppressed.
The mechanism: a calcium channel called TRPV4
The team traced the effect to a cell-surface protein called TRPV4, a channel that lets calcium flow into the cell in response to certain chemical and physical signals. Vanillin appears to bind TRPV4, triggering a rapid calcium influx that in turn switches on signaling pathways governing how a stem cell develops.
When the researchers added a TRPV4 blocker, vanillin's harmful effects on the cells disappeared, as the university reported. That result points to TRPV4 as the direct route by which the flavoring interferes with early development.
What this means, and what it does not
Important caveats apply. This is a controlled laboratory study on cultured stem cells, not a clinical trial in pregnant women, and the researchers note they cannot yet ultimately establish that the same effects would be seen in women and their embryos. It also does not measure cumulative exposure over months of vaping.

Even so, the finding gives a plausible mechanism for concern. Vanillin is used across many vape products, from vanilla and cream profiles to caramel tobacco blends and dessert-style e-liquids, and often at high concentrations. "We focused on vanillin because it is frequently used in e-cigarette fluids, it is often used at high concentrations," Talbot said.
Advice for people who vape
Public health guidance already discourages vaping in pregnancy. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that nicotine in any tobacco product, including e-cigarettes, is unsafe for a developing fetus and can damage the brain and lungs.
The UC Riverside team says its results reinforce that message and add a new reason to be cautious about flavored products in particular, especially for women trying to conceive or who have experienced miscarriage. Anyone who is pregnant, planning a pregnancy or worried about their vaping should talk to their doctor rather than rely on ingredient labels, which often do not list flavor chemicals in detail. Broader research has separately shown that long-term e-cigarette use may raise exposure to harmful chemicals, a concern that the new study extends into the earliest days of pregnancy.
"Women do not necessarily know the chemicals in vape products. Our findings suggest they should be cautious," Talbot said.
