A simple shift in what you eat every day may lower your colorectal cancer risk

The shift is not exotic. In a study of nearly one million adults across the United States and Europe, people whose diets leaned on fruits, vegetables, legumes, dairy, coffee, and tea had meaningfully lower rates of colorectal cancer.

Cutting back on processed meats and sugary drinks pointed in the same direction.

The analysis was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and coordinated in part through the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah. It pooled data from six large cohorts totaling 909,282 participants and tracked new colorectal cancer diagnoses over a median of 14.9 years.

Small shifts, measurable results

Researchers scored each person's diet on how likely it was to drive inflammation or spike insulin. Comparing the highest-quality diets with the lowest, colorectal cancer risk was 18 percent lower for the least insulin-spiking pattern and 16 percent lower for the least inflammatory pattern.

An overall healthy eating score showed a 20 percent reduction. The associations were strongest for cancer in the distal colon, where the highest-quality diets were tied to roughly 23 percent lower risk.

"Colorectal cancer risk isn't shaped by one food or nutrient alone, but by the overall pattern of what people eat day after day," said Mary Playdon, Ph.D., of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Why these foods may matter

The proposed biology fits the numbers. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains deliver fiber that gut bacteria ferment into short-chain fatty acids, mainly butyrate, which appears to slow the growth of colon cancer cells in laboratory studies.

Diets rich in these foods were also linked to lower blood levels of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, both markers of chronic inflammation. Diets heavy in red and processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and refined grains pushed those markers in the opposite direction.

This is an observational study, so it cannot prove that any single food causes or prevents cancer. But the size, geographic reach, and consistency across cohorts strengthen the case that dietary patterns matter.

Why the message lands now

Colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The American Cancer Society projects 158,850 new cases and 55,230 deaths from the disease in 2026.

While incidence is falling in older adults, it has been climbing by roughly 3 percent a year in people aged 20 to 49. That rise has renewed attention to early warning signs of colorectal cancer that younger adults should not ignore.

Anyone with symptoms such as persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, or unexplained weight loss should see a doctor rather than adjust their diet alone.

"What's encouraging is that we saw signs that even relatively small shifts toward healthier eating patterns were associated with meaningful reductions in colorectal cancer risk over time," Playdon added.

The practical takeaway is unglamorous. A daily serving of beans, a mug of coffee or tea, an extra plate of vegetables, and fewer hot dogs or sodas would not overhaul anyone's kitchen. Over years, the study suggests, that ordinary shift may quietly reshape the odds.
