For adults over 50, the widely cited daily protein target may fall short of what aging muscles actually need. A review published in the journal Nutrients in July 2025 puts the target at 1.0 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day for healthy older adults.
That is 25 to 50 percent above the standard Recommended Dietary Allowance of 0.8 grams per kilogram, which applies to all adults. For someone weighing 165 pounds (about 75 kilograms), that shifts the daily target from roughly 60 grams to somewhere between 75 and 90 grams.
The review, authored by a team at Case Western Reserve University, sets the bar higher still for people managing illness or chronic disease. The recommendation rises to 1.2 to 1.5 grams per kilogram during acute or chronic conditions, and up to 2.0 grams per kilogram in severe malnutrition.
Why the daily total isn't the whole story
Hitting a daily number is only part of the picture. Aging muscle responds less efficiently to a given dose of protein, a phenomenon researchers call anabolic resistance. To overcome that dampened signal, the review recommends distributing intake evenly across meals, with roughly 25 to 30 grams of protein at each sitting from either animal or plant sources.

That per-meal threshold matters because protein eaten mostly at dinner does not fully rescue muscles that received little at breakfast or lunch. Spreading protein across the day gives the muscle-building machinery repeated chances to switch on.
The authors also flag a pre-sleep option. A protein-rich snack of around 40 grams before bed may extend amino acid availability overnight and support daily muscle protein synthesis.
How common the shortfall really is
The gap between what older adults eat and what their bodies now need is not small. Around 30 percent of men and 50 percent of women over 71 consume inadequate protein, the review notes, pointing to declining appetite, dental problems, and social isolation among the drivers.
The clinical consequence is sarcopenia, the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength that raises the risk of falls, frailty, and loss of independence. Harvard Medical School reports that sarcopenia affects nearly half of adults above the age of 80.

What 25 to 30 grams looks like on the plate
Reaching that per-meal range is achievable when the plate is built around a concentrated protein source. A palm-sized portion of grilled chicken or fish sits in the target zone. Three eggs served with a glass of milk lands close to it, as does a generous cup of Greek yogurt topped with a handful of nuts or seeds.
Plant-based combinations can reach the target too. Lentils paired with tofu, or beans layered with quinoa, brings meals well into the 20 to 30 gram bracket without any animal products.
The 2013 PROT-AGE position paper from a European geriatrics working group reached a similar 1.0 to 1.2 grams per kilogram conclusion more than a decade ago, and the 2025 review reinforces it.
Adults with kidney disease, or those on medications that affect protein handling, should talk with their doctor before overhauling their diet.
