Scientists have developed a lab-modified kidney that can function across all blood types, offering new hope for future transplants.

For patients waiting for an organ transplant, time can be cruel. Every few hours, another person dies before a match is found.

Shortages have haunted transplant programs for decades — but a new discovery might one day change that.

A breakthrough in compatibility

An international team of researchers from Canada and China has, for the first time, created what they call a “universal” human kidney.

The organ, modified using special enzymes, could theoretically be transplanted into any patient regardless of blood type.

The experimental kidney was implanted into a brain-dead donor patient and functioned for several days — marking the first successful test of its kind in a human model.

The results, published in Nature, suggest a possible future where organ waiting lists could shrink dramatically.

Currently, patients with blood type O face the longest waits, since their immune systems only accept organs from donors with the same type.

At the same time, kidneys with type O are in highest demand because they can be used for anyone.

How the process works

The researchers found a way to remove blood-type markers from kidney tissue using specialized enzymes.

These enzymes act like molecular scissors, cutting away the sugars that determine an organ’s blood type and trigger immune rejection.

Once those markers are gone, the immune system no longer identifies the organ as foreign.

Scientists compare it to stripping a painted surface down to its base layer — the kidney still functions the same, but its “identity” is neutralized.

Promise and limitations

The experiment marks a major advance in transplant medicine, but challenges remain.

After several days, the modified kidney began to partially revert to its original blood type, hinting at a potential immune response.

Still, the early results point toward a future in which organ compatibility may no longer be a barrier — offering new hope to the thousands worldwide waiting for a second chance at life.
