People who ate broccoli one to two times a week had a 32 to 43 percent lower risk of dying from any cause during follow-up, according to a prospective cohort study published in Frontiers in Nutrition in January 2024. The researchers drew on 5,556 US adults aged 20 and older who were surveyed through NHANES between 2003 and 2006 and then tracked through December 2019.
By the end of follow-up, 1,405 participants had died, which was 25.3 percent of the sample. Cardiovascular disease was the single largest cause of death, followed by cancer.
The authors note an important limit up front. As an observational study, it "cannot demonstrate a direct causal relationship between broccoli and mortality risk reduction," and dietary intake was assessed by food frequency questionnaires, which are open to recall bias.
Where the heart benefit may come from

What about cancer
The idea that broccoli helps fight cancer sits mostly in laboratory and animal work. The National Cancer Institute states that indoles and isothiocyanates have "been found to inhibit the development of cancer in several organs in rats and mice," but that studies in humans "have shown mixed results."

Read together, the evidence supports a familiar message rather than a miracle cure. A vegetable rich in vitamin C, fiber and sulforaphane, eaten one or two times a week as part of a broader diet, was associated with lower mortality in a large US cohort, and clinical trials of its most studied compound point to modest, uneven benefits for blood sugar and LDL cholesterol. That is a good reason to keep it on the plate, not a reason to skip a doctor's advice.
