How many minutes of sun exposure you need for vitamin D, and why it depends on your skin tone

How long do you actually need to stand in the sun to make useful vitamin D? A 2024 modeling study in Scientific Reports offers one of the more specific answers yet, and it lands very differently depending on skin tone.

Using satellite UV data from Antalya and Istanbul, in Turkey, researchers calculated the average time required to synthesize 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 for each of the six Fitzpatrick skin types, with roughly a quarter of the body surface exposed. In Antalya, near the Mediterranean coast, the yearly averages ran from about 5 minutes for the fairest skin (Type I) to just over 25 minutes for the darkest skin (Type VI).

The pattern is stark. According to the calculations, Type II skin needed about 6.3 minutes, Type III about 7.6, Type IV around 11.35, and Type V about 15.15 minutes for the same 1,000 IU target. In other words, a person with Type VI skin needs roughly five times as long as someone with Type I to make the same amount.

When the sun actually counts

The model also narrows the useful part of the day. Effective vitamin D synthesis requires the sun to sit high enough in the sky, with a solar elevation above about 45 degrees, so that shorter UVB wavelengths reach the ground. In practice, that puts the productive window between roughly 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with peak synthesis around midday. Outside that band, or through most of winter, skin makes little to no vitamin D even in bright sun.

At the Mediterranean latitudes the authors modeled, the annual active period ran from early March to the third week of October. Antalya, closer to the equator, produced about 17.6 percent more vitamin D synthesis over the year than Istanbul, which underscores how much latitude matters. Cities in the northern half of the United States sit at higher latitudes than either Turkish site, so the practical window is likely narrower still.

Why skin tone changes the math

The differences track melanin. The National Institutes of Health notes that skin melanin content is one of the factors that affects vitamin D synthesis from UV, and that older people and people with dark skin are less able to make vitamin D from sunlight.

That biological reality shows up in US population data. In a large NHANES analysis covering 2001 to 2018, about 60 percent of non-Hispanic Black adults had serum 25(OH)D levels below 50 nmol/L, the study's threshold for moderate or severe deficiency, compared with roughly 15 percent of non-Hispanic White adults.

That gap has practical consequences. Blanket sun-exposure advice built around light skin can leave people with darker skin well short of adequate levels, even when they spend the same amount of time outside.

Where this leaves you

The modeling study is not a prescription. It uses Mediterranean sun, healthy young skin as the reference, and no sunscreen, and the authors are clear that real-world synthesis depends on latitude, season, clothing, air pollution and individual biology.

Dermatologists also caution against treating sunbathing as a vitamin D strategy.

The American Academy of Dermatology states that there is no scientifically proven, safe threshold of UV exposure that allows for maximum vitamin D synthesis without raising skin cancer risk, and recommends getting vitamin D from food and, if needed, supplements. The current US recommended dietary allowance is 600 IU per day for adults up to age 70 and 800 IU after that, with a tolerable upper limit of 4,000 IU.

If you are worried about your levels, especially if you have darker skin, live in the northern US or cover up when outside, a simple blood test and a conversation with your doctor will tell you more than any minutes-in-the-sun rule of thumb.
