Children who logged more screen time from grade-school age into their teens tended to score higher on cognitive processing tests as adolescents, according to an 8-year follow-up from Finland's PANIC study.
The finding cuts against a decade of blanket warnings against screens. Researchers stress that the results are observational and do not prove screens themselves improved thinking, but the direction of the association surprised them.
The work, published in Pediatric Exercise Science by teams at the Universities of Jyväskylä and Eastern Finland, tracked 260 Finnish children through mid-adolescence.
What the study measured
The sample included 124 girls and 136 boys, with an average age of 15.8 years at follow-up. Physical activity and sedentary time were captured with a combined heart-rate and movement sensor, alongside survey questionnaires at three time points.

Cognition was assessed at the 8-year mark using the CogState test battery, which probes learning, attention, and working memory.
"The findings suggest that screen time can support children's and adolescents' cognitive processing," said Petri Jalanko, a doctoral researcher at the University of Jyväskylä. He added that what children actually do during screen time is likely the crucial factor.
A messier picture for physical activity
The researchers expected physical activity to be the standout driver of stronger cognition. The signal turned out more tangled, and in one place moved in the opposite direction to expectations.
Self-reported cumulative unsupervised physical activity from childhood to adolescence was inversely associated with accuracy on a working memory task. Device-measured activity showed no clear association with cognition at all.

Patterns also split by sex. Girls with more light-intensity activity tended to have better working memory. Boys benefited more from guided, organized physical activity.
"Our study indicates that the connections between physical activity and sedentary behavior and cognitive processing are complex and depend on sex, the type and assessment method of physical activity, and sedentary time," Jalanko said.
What it does and doesn't say
The study is observational. It cannot demonstrate that screens caused the cognitive gains. Children who use more screens may differ in schooling, home environment, or the type of media they engage with, and any of those could carry the effect.
The researchers frame the takeaway as balance rather than permission. "We should not regard screen time solely as harmful but seek a balance between physical activity and screen time that promotes active thinking," Jalanko said.

The result also lands in a shifting policy landscape. In February 2026, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued its first screen-time update in a decade, stepping back from strict hour limits in favor of a focus on content quality, context, and what screens displace, from sleep to movement to face-to-face time.
For parents fighting daily screen battles, the study is one data point in a larger evidence base, not a green light to hand over the tablet. Children with signs of anxiety, sleep problems, or attention difficulties should still be discussed with a pediatrician.
