Looking after your immune system is about more than avoiding the next cold. Every day, it works to identify and remove abnormal cells before they can cause harm.
That is why scientists continue to search for simple ways to strengthen the body's natural defenses.
Now, a new study from Rockefeller University, published in the journal Cell and reported by ScienceDaily, suggests that an inexpensive nutrient already found in many diets could play a much bigger role than previously believed.
A closer look at arginine
Rather than developing a new drug, the researchers investigated arginine, a naturally occurring nutrient that the body also obtains from protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, dairy products and nuts.

Their findings suggest that when arginine levels fall, the immune system becomes less effective at recognizing cells that have turned cancerous or become infected with viruses.
The team found that low arginine levels reduce the production of MHC class I proteins. These proteins act as identification markers on the surface of cells, helping immune cells distinguish healthy tissue from potentially dangerous cells. Without enough of these markers, harmful cells are more likely to escape detection.
Encouraging findings
The researchers examined laboratory models of colon cancer, influenza and SARS-CoV-2. Across each of these conditions, arginine levels were consistently lower than normal, prompting the team to explore whether restoring those levels could improve immune function.
Experiments in mice produced promising results. Animals fed an arginine-rich diet developed fewer colon tumors and experienced milder viral infections than those receiving less of the nutrient.

Researchers also observed benefits when arginine was given after influenza infection, suggesting it may influence the body's immune response even after illness has begun.
More research needed
Although the findings are encouraging, the researchers stress that the study has so far been limited to laboratory experiments and animal models. Clinical trials will be required before arginine supplements can be recommended for preventing or treating disease in humans.
If future studies confirm these results, arginine could become a valuable addition to existing cancer therapies or antiviral strategies.
For now, the research offers a better understanding of how nutrition may directly influence the immune system and highlights the growing connection between diet and human health.
