Many people trying to make healthier choices assume that sugar is simply sugar, regardless of where it comes from. Whether it's poured from a carton of orange juice or a can of soda, the expectation has long been that the body reacts in much the same way.
However, researchers from Spain's CEBAS-CSIC are challenging that assumption. Writing about their findings in The Conversation, the team, led by Professor Francisco A.
Tomás-Barberán, suggests that the natural composition of fruit may influence how the body processes sugar, reports La Vanguardia.
Beyond the sugar
Rather than comparing drinks with different sugar levels, the researchers designed beverages containing the same amount of glucose, fructose and sucrose. The key difference was how much natural orange juice each drink contained.

The study, involving healthy young men, found that participants who drank 100% orange juice experienced a slower rise in blood glucose than those who consumed a drink made with added sugars alone.
Researchers believe the fruit's natural matrix, including fibre, minerals and plant compounds, helps moderate sugar absorption.
Not everyone responds alike
Another important finding was that participants did not react in the same way. Some experienced much larger blood sugar increases than others, even after consuming identical drinks.
The researchers say these differences highlight the importance of looking beyond general dietary advice and recognising that individual biology can influence metabolic responses.

More research needed
The researchers stress that the findings should not be interpreted as proof that fruit juice is universally healthier than soft drinks.
The study was limited to healthy young men, meaning further research is needed to determine whether the same effects occur in women, older adults and people with metabolic conditions.
Instead, the study adds to growing evidence that the body's response depends not only on the amount of sugar consumed but also on the food it comes from and the individual consuming it.
