Researchers uncover why some people are simply better at remembering faces

Some people can remember faces with astonishing accuracy, and new research reveals why their eyes work differently from everyone else’s.

Some people seem able to recognise a face almost instantly, even if they last saw it years ago or only briefly in passing.

Researchers have long suspected that these “super recognisers” process visual information differently, but the source of their unusual ability has remained difficult to pinpoint.

A new study from an Australian research team offers a clearer picture — not by measuring memory, but by examining what their eyes choose to look at.

How the study was set up

The researchers revisited a large eye-tracking dataset in which volunteers viewed unfamiliar faces while their eye movements were recorded in detail.

By analysing the precise regions each participant focused on, the team could reconstruct what the viewer effectively “captured” during their first moments with a face.

Why the gaze matters

Rather than simply counting how many areas people inspected, the scientists asked whether the type of information collected differed between groups.

When they fed the reconstructed visual samples into several AI facial-recognition models, the results were striking: images based on super recognisers’ gaze patterns consistently led to more accurate matches.

What sets super recognisers apart

According to the researchers, this suggests that super recognisers naturally lock onto the most identity-rich parts of a face — subtle contours, distinctive asymmetries, small marks, ear shape and other features that help distinguish one person from another.

Crucially, they appear to do this immediately, without the need for training or deliberate strategy.

Can these skills be learned?

Although the strongest performers show abilities that appear innate, the findings indicate that targeted practice may help typical observers improve.

Professions such as forensic facial examination demonstrate that expertise can be developed with enough exposure and guidance.

Still, the study points to an underlying advantage in how super recognisers gather visual information from the outset.
