A routine operation took a shocking turn after a rare surgical mistake went unnoticed for months.

Most people expect some discomfort after surgery, but persistent pain is often dismissed as part of the healing process. In rare cases, however, ongoing symptoms can point to a far more serious problem.

A case from Brazil, reported by LADbible, highlights how devastating such mistakes can become.

Pain worsened

Erica Cristina Bannai Von Hoonholtz, a mother of three, underwent a hysterectomy in January. Instead of improving, she spent the following months dealing with increasing abdominal pain, vomiting and severe discomfort.

According to NewsX, she was admitted to Santa Casa de Misericordia Hospital in Braganca Paulista on 11 April for emergency surgery.

During the procedure, doctors reportedly discovered an 18-centimetre pair of surgical scissors that had been left inside her abdomen after the earlier operation. They also found that part of her small intestine had become necrotic.

Series of surgeries

The discovery led to a lengthy course of treatment. Erica ultimately underwent four operations, including the original hysterectomy, surgery to remove the scissors, treatment for a hernia and intestinal abscess, and a further procedure to treat a liver abscess.

NewsX reported that the hospital acknowledged the incident and has covered the costs of medical treatment related to the case. The family has also been offered psychological support during her recovery.

Investigation continues

The incident is now the subject of both civil and criminal investigations. Erica has also criticised the surgeon who performed the procedure and filed a police report over the events.

Santa Casa de Misericordia Hospital said it could not comment publicly on individual cases because of patient confidentiality and data protection laws.

The hospital added that it would cooperate fully with the relevant authorities as the investigation continues into possible criminal negligence.
