The Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health sets the tolerable upper intake level for vitamin C at 2,000 milligrams a day for adults. That is more than 20 times the recommended dietary allowance, which stands at 90 mg for men and 75 mg for women.

Going past that ceiling day after day is where problems begin. The two most common issues are gastrointestinal distress and, in vulnerable people, a higher risk of kidney stones.

Why the ceiling exists

The 2,000 mg limit is anchored in a specific side effect: osmotic diarrhea. When the body cannot absorb any more vitamin C, the excess pulls water into the gut. Whole foods rarely push anyone into this territory. Half a cup of raw sweet red pepper delivers about 95 mg. A medium orange offers roughly 70 mg. The excess intake that concerns authorities almost always comes from pills and powders.

The kidney stone connection

Vitamin C is partly metabolized to oxalate, which the body clears through urine. When urinary oxalate rises, it can combine with calcium and form the crystals that seed the most common type of kidney stone.

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health notes that intakes above roughly 3,000 mg a day may promote increased formation of kidney stones in those with existing kidney disease. The risk is not spread evenly across the population. It concentrates in people who have already had an oxalate stone, people with chronic kidney disease, and people taking large supplemental doses on top of a normal diet.

Who should be most cautious

If you have a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones, a diagnosis of kidney impairment, or a family history of stones, high-dose vitamin C supplements are the wrong tool. Talking to a doctor before adding a daily gram or more is the sensible move, especially if you also take other supplements that affect the kidneys, such as magnesium at high doses.

For most healthy adults, staying under 2,000 mg from all sources - food plus supplements - keeps the risk low. A standard multivitamin usually contains 60 to 90 mg, well within the safe range.

Does megadosing help immunity

The idea that swallowing gram-sized doses of vitamin C shortens or prevents colds is stubborn, but the evidence is thin. A Cochrane review of 29 trials with 11,306 participants found that regular vitamin C supplementation had no effect on common cold incidence in the ordinary population.

Duration was trimmed modestly. Adults on daily vitamin C had colds about 8 percent shorter, and children about 14 percent shorter. Taking vitamin C only after symptoms appeared showed no consistent effect on cold duration or severity.

A separate exception showed up in people exposed to short bursts of extreme physical stress, such as marathon runners and skiers, where regular vitamin C roughly halved the risk of catching a cold. That is a narrow group. For everyone else, pushing intake far above the RDA to prevent a winter cold is not backed by the trial data.

The practical bottom line

The vitamin C you get from fruits and vegetables is essentially risk free. If you take a supplement, keeping the daily total under the 2,000 mg ceiling is what NIH considers safe for adults, and staying much closer to the RDA is enough for the vitamin's core roles in the body. Anyone with a personal or family history of kidney stones, or with reduced kidney function, should discuss the dose with a clinician before topping up with grams instead of milligrams.
