Ultra-processed food may be quietly dulling your focus, even if you eat well otherwise

Even people who eat reasonably well show measurable drops in attention and mental processing speed when ultra-processed foods make up a larger share of their calories.

That is the takeaway from a 2026 study in Alzheimer's & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring that tracked 2,192 Australian adults aged 40 to 70 and matched their diets against standardized cognitive tests.

For every 10 percent increase in the share of daily calories from ultra-processed foods, attention scores fell by a small but consistent amount on the Cogstate Brief Battery, a set of computer tasks used to measure visual attention, memory and processing speed.

The effect was independent of how healthy the rest of the diet was, and it held up even in people who otherwise followed a Mediterranean-style pattern.

What counts as ultra-processed

Ultra-processed foods are the category defined by the NOVA food classification: industrial formulations made mostly from substances extracted from foods, plus additives, with little or no whole food left. In practice, that means soft drinks, packaged salty snacks, ready-made meals, sweetened breakfast cereals, hot dogs and mass-produced packaged breads and desserts.

In the Monash University-led study, participants got about 41 percent of their daily energy from these products, close to the Australian national average. A 10 percent shift, the researchers noted, is roughly the equivalent of one extra packet of chips a day.

What the numbers actually mean

The attention effect was small on paper. Each 10 percent rise in ultra-processed intake was linked to a 0.05-point drop in attention scores, a small effect size in statistical terms.

In everyday language, it points to slightly slower reaction times and more slips on tasks that demand sustained focus, the kind of low-grade fuzziness that is easy to blame on a bad night's sleep.

The same 10 percent shift was tied to a 0.24-point rise on a modified version of the CAIDE score, a widely used estimate of long-term dementia risk that pools factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and physical activity.

Memory, however, was not affected in the analysis, and the study is observational, meaning it can show a link but not prove that ultra-processed food is the cause.

Why processing itself may matter

The most striking finding is that the association with attention and with dementia risk factors did not go away once the researchers accounted for overall diet quality. That undercuts the common assumption that a generally healthy plate cancels out the occasional convenience food.

"Food ultra-processing often destroys the natural structure of food and introduces potentially harmful substances like artificial additives or processing chemicals," said Dr. Barbara Cardoso of Monash University's Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food, who led the work, in comments reported by Medical Xpress. "To put our findings in perspective, a 10% increase in UPFs is roughly equivalent to adding a standard packet of chips to your daily diet."

The pattern lines up with earlier research linking heavy ultra-processed diets to a range of health harms, including higher risk of heart disease and, in a separate line of work, a raised risk of dementia over longer follow-ups.

What it means at the kitchen counter

The practical read is not that one soda ruins your afternoon. It is that the running share of ultra-processed food in a person's diet appears to track with subtle changes in focus, and that swapping out even one daily item, a packet of chips, a bottled iced coffee, a frozen ready-meal, is a plausible lever.

People with persistent concerns about attention or memory should raise them with their doctor rather than self-diagnose.

The finding also sharpens a question researchers have been circling for years: whether the harm from ultra-processed foods is mostly about what they crowd out, or about what industrial processing itself does to the final product. In this dataset, the second explanation held up.
