For two years, researchers at Loma Linda University in California and Hospital Clínic in Barcelona asked 708 healthy older adults to add walnuts to their daily diet. In the Walnuts and Healthy Aging (WAHA) trial, LDL cholesterol dropped by an average of 4.3 mg/dL. Small, dense LDL particles, the subtype most tied to heart disease, fell by around 6 percent.
Blood pressure moved too. A WAHA sub-study published in Hypertension in 2019 reported office systolic blood pressure fell by 4.6 mmHg over two years in the walnut group, while diastolic pressure was unchanged.
"Eating a handful of walnuts every day is a simple way to promote cardiovascular health," Emilio Ros of Hospital Clínic Barcelona, one of the study's senior authors, said in a statement summarizing the LDL results.
What makes walnuts different
Walnuts are the only common tree nut with a meaningful amount of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid the body cannot produce on its own. About one ounce provides roughly 2.5 grams.

No other everyday tree nut comes close. That distinction is a big part of why walnuts show up so consistently in cardiology research on cholesterol and inflammation.

The idea that walnuts might work partly through the gut has been building. A Pennsylvania State University feeding study, published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2019, put walnuts to the test in adults at cardiovascular risk.
After six weeks of eating about 2.5 ounces of walnuts a day, the group showed higher levels of gut bacteria such as Roseburia and Eubacterium eligens. Neither species was just passing through.

Higher Eubacterium eligens tracked with lower blood pressure, and the Lachnospiraceae family lined up with lower total and non-HDL cholesterol. The bacterial shifts appeared to travel with the cardiovascular benefit.
Walnuts are rich in ellagitannins, plant polyphenols that gut microbes convert into anti-inflammatory compounds. That gives researchers a plausible link from what shows up in the microbiome to what shows up on a lipid panel.
What this means at breakfast
The doses in these trials are unspectacular. Participants ate about 30 to 60 grams a day, roughly a handful. In WAHA, that amount did not cause weight gain over two years, a common concern with a calorie-dense food.
Anyone on blood-thinning medication or with a known nut allergy should talk with a doctor before making walnuts a daily habit.

The picture that emerges is not dramatic. It is the kind of small, steady effect nutrition science increasingly points to, a nudge to LDL and blood pressure, and a shift in the gut ecosystem that may help explain both.
