A study published in 2026 in Translational Psychiatry ran the diets of 28,884 adults through a scoring system called the Dietary Index for Gut Microbiota, or DI-GM, and found that people whose meals looked more gut-friendly reported fewer symptoms of depression on the standard PHQ-9 screening tool.
The relationship held after standard adjustments and appeared stronger in people with a higher body mass index, with systemic inflammation flagged as a likely piece of the mechanism.
The DI-GM is not a mood test. It rewards ten foods and food groups that research has tied to a more diverse, short-chain-fatty-acid-producing gut microbiome, and it penalizes four that tend to shift the balance the other way.
On the plus side of the score sit fermented dairy such as yogurt and kefir, chickpeas, soy foods, whole grains, dietary fiber, cranberries, avocados, broccoli, coffee and green tea. Points come off for red meat, processed meat, refined grains and diets in which fat provides at least 40 percent of daily energy, according to the literature-based index developed at the University of South Carolina and published in Nutrients in April 2024.

In the 2026 analysis, participants with depression had lower DI-GM scores than those without, and the authors describe the diet-depression link as modifiable and hypothesis-generating for future intervention trials.
The paper leans on regression, generalized additive models and a machine-learning approach to test the pattern from several angles, but it is cross-sectional, so it can only show association, not that a gut-supportive plate causes depression risk to fall.
Where BMI seems to change the picture
The inverse association between DI-GM score and PHQ-9 depression score was not uniform across the sample. Interaction analyses in the Translational Psychiatry paper pointed to significant BMI-related heterogeneity, with the diet signal appearing more pronounced at higher body mass index.

The idea that what you eat can nudge mood through the gut is not new. A 2026 review in MedComm reported that gut microbiota significantly mediated the link between Mediterranean-style eating and depressive symptoms, with diets high in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains and fish tied to anti-inflammatory profiles, and diets high in ultra-processed foods, saturated fat and refined sugar tied to pro-inflammatory ones.
A separate cross-sectional analysis in 650 Chinese adults found that higher DI-GM scores tracked with lower levels of C-reactive protein and other inflammation markers, a pattern consistent with the mediator role suggested by the 2026 depression paper.

What it means for the dinner table
None of the researchers argue that food replaces treatment for depression, a condition that the World Health Organization estimates affects about 5.7 percent of adults worldwide, or roughly 332 million people.
