Experts recommend changing your bed sheets about every two weeks – but in some cases, it’s worth doing it a little more often.

It’s one of those household questions that everyone answers differently. Some swear by a weekly wash, others stretch it much longer — but how often should you really change your sheets if you want a clean and healthy night’s sleep?

Why it matters

Sheets collect far more than dust. Every night, the human body sheds sweat, skin cells, and oils that quickly build up in fabric.

Add pets, morning coffees in bed, or a partner who runs warm — and that cozy space becomes a magnet for bacteria and dust mites.

According to Asthma-Allergy Denmark, changing your bedding every two weeks is a solid general rule. But depending on lifestyle and habits, some people may need to do it more often.

When to change more often

There’s no single timeline that fits everyone. What matters most is how the bed is used and who’s using it.

Experts in hygiene and food science, such as lecturer Michael René, note that frequent washing is especially important if:

  • More than one person shares the bed or small children sleep there
  • Pets are allowed under the covers or at the foot of the bed
  • You eat, drink, or spend long hours lounging in bed
  • You’ve been sick or had contact with bodily fluids

After an illness, it’s always a good idea to change sheets immediately, even if you washed them recently.

Beyond hygiene, nothing quite matches the feeling of sliding into freshly laundered sheets — soft, crisp, and clean. And if that small effort can also help you sleep better, it’s worth the routine.
