Most people think they need more protein – 350 studies suggest otherwise

For years, the loudest advice in nutrition has pointed one way. Eat more protein. Build more muscle. Age better. A new scientific review lands squarely against that message.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison sifted through more than 350 studies of protein-restricted diets in yeast, flies, rodents and people. Their conclusion, published July 31, 2026 in the journal Cell Press Blue, is that eating less protein appears to promote metabolic health, healthspan and lifespan across a striking range of species.

The finding cuts against the current direction of federal nutrition policy. In January 2026, the US Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture released new Dietary Guidelines that call for 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, up sharply from the long-standing Recommended Dietary Allowance of 0.8 grams per kilogram.

What the review actually found

Bailey A. Knopf and Dudley W. Lamming pooled decades of experimental work. Animal studies showed a consistent pattern. Mice, rats, flies and fish that ate less protein tended to live longer and stay metabolically healthier. Human trials in the review reported weight loss and improved fasting blood sugar in people who cut protein, even when overall calories did not drop.

A specific set of amino acids kept turning up as culprits. Restricting methionine, isoleucine and valine, the authors report, reproduces many of the same benefits as cutting total protein. These amino acids activate growth signaling pathways that, when constantly stimulated, appear to push cells toward inflammation and metabolic dysfunction.

One mechanism the review highlights is a hormone called fibroblast growth factor 21, or FGF21. Levels rise when protein intake drops. In animal experiments, higher FGF21 was linked to greater energy expenditure, better blood sugar control and longer life.

Not a green light to eat less protein

The paper is a narrative review, not a controlled human trial, and outside experts urge caution before rewriting anyone's dinner plate.

Paul Greenhaff, professor of muscle metabolism at the University of Nottingham, noted in comments through the Science Media Centre that the associations flagged in the review are thought-provoking, but whether they translate to the human condition is debatable. Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at The Open University, added that the review was not a systematic one, meaning the authors did not follow a standardized method for selecting the studies they included.

Lamming himself draws a careful line. In the university's announcement, he said it is absolutely crystal clear that there are benefits of protein to muscle growth and exercise response of active individuals. But because most people are relatively sedentary, he added, many people are likely consuming more protein than they actually need.

Older adults, athletes, people recovering from illness and those trying to preserve muscle mass have their own protein needs, and cutting intake could carry real downsides, including poorer immune function and weaker bones.

What it means for your plate

The take-home is not that protein is bad. It is that the optimal amount probably depends on the person, the review authors argue. A sedentary office worker following the upper end of the new guidelines may be pushing intake past what their body benefits from, while an active adult lifting weights three times a week may sit closer to the mark.

For most readers considering a change, the sensible move is to raise it with a doctor or registered dietitian who knows their health history. Population averages rarely fit anyone perfectly.
