Two people can weigh the same, stand the same height, and share an identical body mass index. One can be lean and muscular. The other can carry twice as much fat.
BMI does not distinguish between the two, because it is built from height and weight alone. As the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute notes on its BMI page, the number "doesn't take into account your muscle mass, bone density, or body composition."
Body fat percentage does. The most widely cited healthy ranges come from a study of 1,626 adults published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by researchers at three universities.
They measured body fat with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and a 4-compartment reference model, then derived percentage ranges anchored to the standard BMI categories.

Healthy body fat by age and sex
The ranges shift upward with each decade. Not because higher fat becomes desirable, but because muscle mass falls as we age. The bands below correspond to the "normal" BMI window (roughly 18.5 to 24.9) in the Gallagher dataset.
Men
20 to 39 years: about 8 to 20 percent
40 to 59 years: about 11 to 22 percent

60 to 79 years: about 13 to 25 percent
Women
20 to 39 years: about 21 to 33 percent
40 to 59 years: about 23 to 34 percent

Values above the top of each band correspond to overweight and, higher still, to obesity. A widely used clinical threshold for obesity, cited by the World Health Organization, is roughly 25 percent body fat and above in men and 35 percent and above in women, levels linked to elevated cardiometabolic risk.
Why the healthy range creeps up with age
The upward drift is driven by sarcopenia, the gradual loss of skeletal muscle that begins in mid-adulthood.
Starting around age 30, adults lose roughly 3 to 5 percent of their muscle mass per decade, according to NIH News in Health. Cleveland Clinic puts the upper end of the range higher, noting that people may lose "as much as 8% of your muscle mass each decade", with the process speeding up after 65.

Fat and lean mass are the two big compartments of body composition. Less muscle at the same weight means a higher percentage of what remains is fat. That is why a 60-year-old can look and weigh the same as they did at 30 and still have a meaningfully higher body fat percentage.
Sarcopenia matters beyond aesthetics. Cleveland Clinic describes it as "the gradual loss of muscle mass, strength and physical performance that happens with age," and it is a recognized driver of falls, frailty, and functional decline in older adults.
What high body fat actually means for health
The Gallagher ranges were built to line up with the World Health Organization's BMI cut-points. The upper edge of each band roughly marks where excess body fat starts to correlate with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic conditions.
It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Two people with the same percentage can carry very different amounts of visceral fat, the deep abdominal fat most closely tied to cardiometabolic risk.

If your number sits well above the healthy band for your age and sex, or if you have symptoms such as fatigue, elevated blood pressure, or a family history of metabolic disease, that is a conversation to bring to your primary care doctor rather than a home decision.
How to actually measure it
Body fat percentage is trickier to measure than weight. The options range from clinical precision to a $20 tool.
DEXA scan. The clinical reference standard. A short low-dose X-ray separates bone, lean mass, and fat, and can detect small changes over time. Available at some hospitals, sports medicine clinics, and dedicated body composition centers.
Bioelectrical impedance. Used by smart scales and handheld devices. Convenient and cheap, but sensitive to hydration, recent meals, and exercise, so readings can swing several percentage points day to day.
Skin-fold calipers. Pinch measurements at set sites, plugged into an equation. Inexpensive and reasonably reliable when done by a trained tester, less so when self-administered.
For most people, the useful move is not a single number but a trend. Measure the same way, at the same time of day, under the same conditions, and watch the direction of travel.
