If a bowl of cereal leaves you rummaging in the kitchen an hour later, the culprit may be a small hormone called ghrelin. Ghrelin is produced mostly in the stomach and tells the brain it is time to eat.
A randomized crossover trial published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2013 found that a breakfast with about 35 grams of protein lowered daily ghrelin and raised the satiety hormone peptide YY, while a normal-protein breakfast did not.
The trial involved 20 overweight or obese late-adolescent girls who habitually skipped breakfast. Participants rotated through three conditions: skipping breakfast, a 13-gram-protein cereal breakfast, and a 35-gram-protein breakfast built around eggs and lean beef. Only the higher-protein meal shifted the hormones and reduced evening snacking on high-fat foods.
Why protein pulls the appetite levers
Ghrelin rises before meals and falls after eating. Peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), the same satiety hormone that GLP-1 medications mimic, rise in response to food and signal fullness. Protein appears to move these signals more forcefully than carbohydrate.

A 2025 crossover study in the European Journal of Nutrition tested this in 18 younger and older adults. Both a plant-based and an animal-based high-protein breakfast produced greater GLP-1 and PYY responses than a low-protein, carbohydrate-heavy meal, with no meaningful difference between the two protein sources.
Similar results turned up in a separate randomized trial in adults reported in Clinical Nutrition Experimental, where a breakfast built around protein raised PYY levels compared with a carbohydrate-based meal of the same calorie count. The direction of effect is consistent, though these are small, short-term trials rather than long-term weight studies.
What that looks like on a plate
The trials cluster around roughly 25 to 35 grams of protein at breakfast, well above what a bowl of cereal or a bagel delivers. Practical options that get you into that range include two or three eggs, a cup of Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, a serving of smoked salmon, or a scoop of whey mixed into oats.
For overall daily needs, the Recommended Dietary Allowance is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Harvard Health notes that protein is more effective if you space it out across the day rather than loading it into a single evening meal.

The honest caveats
The hormonal effect is clearest in people who currently skip breakfast or start the day with mostly refined carbohydrate. If you already eat a substantial protein-rich breakfast, adding more is unlikely to change much.
The trials also measured hormones and short-term appetite, not long-term weight loss. In the adolescent study, daily calorie intake did not fall significantly, though evening high-fat snacking did. And in the 2025 adult trial, appetite measures shifted but lunch intake was unchanged.
Anyone with kidney disease, diabetes, or a medical reason to limit protein should check with their doctor before overhauling their meals. For most healthy adults, the practical takeaway is modest but useful. A first meal built around protein appears to blunt the hunger signal for several hours, which is a small edge worth having if the afternoon vending machine keeps winning.
