Two dead and several seriously ill after meningitis outbreak

The disease is caused by meningococcal bacteria. These bacteria can attack the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord, leading to meningitis.

The organisation Meningitis Now explains that students and young adults face an increased risk.

The bacteria can spread more easily in places where many people live, study, and spend time in close contact.

Health authorities also warn that students may overlook the early signs of the disease.

This is because the symptoms can resemble those of a cold, influenza, or general malaise.

Serious situation in Canterbury

In the city of Canterbury, health authorities have distributed antibiotics to students.

At the same time, experts are trying to identify people who have been in close contact with those infected.

According to the UK Health Security Agency, 13 cases of invasive meningococcal disease have been recorded in the area, and the illness can develop very rapidly.

The outbreak has had serious consequences. Two people have died, including a student from the University of Kent, and 11 young people have become seriously ill and been admitted to hospital, according to The Guardian.

New study: Severe respiratory infections may increase risk of lung cancer

New study: Natural compounds from cherries may slow tumor growth

A research team from Texas A&M University has analyzed biological processes involved in an aggressive form of breast cancer.

The study focused on triple-negative breast cancer, which is often more difficult to treat than other types because the disease lacks several of the receptors that many treatments normally target.

This type of cancer is known to spread relatively quickly to other organs, including the lungs and brain.

For this reason, metastasis is a central focus in modern cancer research, as it is often a decisive factor in the disease’s mortality.

Among other things, the researchers analyzed activity in genes associated with cancer cells’ ability to spread and resist treatment.

They also examined the body’s immune response, including T lymphocytes, which play a role in combating abnormal cells, according to information from Texas A&M AgriLife.

Experiments with several treatments

In the new research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, mice were divided into four groups.

One group received a specific plant-based compound before tumor cells were introduced.

Another group received the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin after tumors had developed.

A third group received a combination of both treatments, while a control group received neither.

According to the results, analyses of tumor tissue showed differences in both tumor growth and cellular activity between the groups.

The researchers also assessed the spread to other organs such as the liver, heart, kidneys, and spleen.

At the same time, differences were observed in the animals’ weight development during the treatment courses, which was used as an indicator of possible side effects.

Possible significance of plant compounds

Are you eating too much sugar? Here’s the recommended limit

Many people do not think about how much sugar they consume during a single day. However, health organizations have clear limits on what is considered an appropriate intake.

According to the American dietary guidelines, The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), added sugar should account for no more than 10 percent of daily calories.

For a person who consumes around 2,000 calories per day, this corresponds to about 50 grams, or roughly 12 teaspoons of sugar, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The American Heart Association recommends an even lower limit. Its guidance states that adults should consume no more than 6 to 9 teaspoons of added sugar daily.

Children over the age of two should consume no more than 6 teaspoons per day.

Possible consequences

A high sugar intake can lead to an overall excess of calories.

This may increase the risk of weight gain and diseases associated with being overweight, such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

Researchers have also examined links between sugar and conditions such as type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease.

A review published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that sugary drinks may play a role, but the results are not conclusive.

Another study published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews shows differing results. Many of the studies are also based on observational data.

Sugar is also linked to dental problems. A study published in Advances in Nutrition has shown that the risk of cavities decreases when less than 10 percent of daily calories come from added sugar.

Where is the sugar hiding?

Many people associate sugar with candy and desserts. However, a large share comes from everyday products.

Beverages in particular contribute significantly. Soft drinks, sports drinks, and sweetened coffee or tea account for about half of the added sugar in the diet, according to the American Heart Association.

Novo Nordisk receives warning letter from FDA

People generally assume that medicines approved for public use are monitored closely by authorities.

That is now the case for Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, which has received a formal warning from the United States drug regulator.

Regulators step in

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent a warning letter to Novo Nordisk regarding how the company reported potential adverse reactions linked to some of its medicines.

According to reporting by CBS News, the issue was identified during an inspection of Novo Nordisk’s U.S. headquarters in Plainsboro, New Jersey.

The inspection took place in early 2025 and focused on whether the company followed required procedures for submitting safety information.

The warning letter was issued on March 5 and addresses whether the pharmaceutical company complied with established reporting protocols.

Focus on semaglutide

The FDA’s review references several serious cases involving treatments that contain semaglutide, an active ingredient used in widely prescribed medicines.

These include:

  • Ozempic, a treatment for type 2 diabetes
  • Wegovy, a drug used for weight management

According to CBS News, regulators mentioned three patient deaths and additional reports involving suicidal thoughts. The FDA has not concluded that the medication caused these events.

Company response

Novo Nordisk confirmed it received the warning letter and said the matter relates to an inspection conducted on February 7, 2025.

The company stated it has been working to address the issues raised and has submitted multiple updates to the FDA outlining corrective actions. Novo expects the matter to be resolved through continued dialogue with the regulator.
